Levitov, Kaaland to Succeed Loertscher and Marcoux as Editors of Teacher Librarian: The Journal for School Library Professionals.

Teacher Librarian: The Journal for School Library Professionals (TL) announced today the appointment of Deb Levitov and Christie Kaaland as editor and associate editor, respectively. They will succeed retiring editors David Loertscher and Elizabeth “Betty” Marcoux. Levitov and Kaaland will assume their roles with the February 2016 issue.

Levitov was managing editor of School Library Monthly magazine for 10 years. Prior to that, she worked in various roles (e.g., educator, teacher librarian and district coordinator) for the Lincoln Public School District in Lincoln, NE for more than 25 years. Levitov has chaired or been a member of various committees for the American Library Association related to advocacy: the AASL Standards (L4L), Common Core, and the School Library Media Program of the Year Award (SLMPY). She has also contributed to professional literature in the form of books, book chapters, and articles.

Kaaland is on the faculty at Antioch University Seattle, where she teaches in the teacher certification program and is the director of Antioch’s school library endorsement program. Previously, she was a librarian in the Tacoma School District for more than a decade. She is known nationally for her work on advocacy, her many conference presentations, and contributions to professional literature. She is an active member of WLMA, AASL, ALA.

“Dave and Betty have done such a great job with TL, it is hard to express our gratitude adequately,” stated TL publisher Edward Kurdyla, noting, “They broadened the scope of coverage and became early advocates for reform, particularly in the development and adoption of the learning commons concept.”  Loertscher was named editor in 2005; Marcoux joined as co-editor in 2008.

“As sad as we are to see Dave and Betty retire,” Kurdyla said “we are extremely pleased and fortunate to have two such accomplished professionals as Deb and Christie to assume the reins of the journal.  TL’s future looks very bright”
